  • Our Story | TESTING: WHDT 2026

To bring people together through live theatre and hospitality, delivering high-quality performances alongside a thoughtfully prepared dining experience, all in an atmosphere where every guest feels welcome. Mission Statement To be the region’s leading destination for live entertainment and dining, known for experiences that feel effortless, engaging, and worth coming back for, while continuing to grow the arts across Southwest Virginia. Vision Statement Who We Are Our story Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre began with a simple but ambitious idea: to bring high-quality live theatre to a place where it didn’t traditionally exist. Founded by Peggy Sutphin in 1999, the theatre was built from the ground up in the mountains of Southwest Virginia, not because it was easy, but because she believed there was an audience for it. In the early years, that belief was tested often. Building a theatre in a rural market came with its share of challenges. There were seasons of uncertainty, long hours, and constant reinvention just to keep the doors open. It wasn’t handed to her, and it didn’t happen overnight. What kept it going was persistence, a clear vision, and a commitment to creating something worth showing up for. Over time, Wohlfahrt Haus grew into more than just a venue. It became a destination. Guests returned year after year, bringing friends, family, and new audiences with them. The experience evolved, but the core idea stayed the same: combine great food, strong performances, and a welcoming atmosphere into one seamless night out. That foundation is what allowed the theatre to reach where it is today. After more than 25 years, Wohlfahrt Haus has established itself as a staple in the region, drawing guests from across Southwest Virginia and beyond. It’s not just about longevity, it’s about consistency and the ability to adapt while staying true to what works. Today, a new generation of leadership is building on that foundation. The focus is on strengthening the experience, expanding the reach, and continuing to grow without losing what made the theatre special in the first place. That includes everything from updated productions to new ways of connecting with the community. One of the most meaningful extensions of that vision is the Red Stag Foundation for the Arts. Created to expand access to theatre and arts education across the region, the foundation carries the mission forward in a new way. It reflects the same belief that started it all: that live performance has a place here, and that it should be accessible to everyone.
